About Bayshore Center at Bivalve

The Bayshore Center at Bivalve (BCB) was established in 1988 with a mission to save and restore the AJ Meerwald, a historic 1928 Delaware Bay Oyster Schooner. This grassroots initiative has blossomed into a vibrant organization dedicated to advancing the understanding of the human impact on New Jersey’s aquatic environment through education, advocacy, and engaging programming.

Our Historic Schooner

In 1996, the AJ Meerwald was listed on the National and State Register of Historic Places, and in 1998, it was designated as the Official Tall Ship of New Jersey. The restoration of this iconic vessel laid the groundwork for a region-wide educational facility and shipboard programming, fostering a community of volunteers and members dedicated to maritime history.

Delaware Bay Museum

In 1991, BCB opened the Delaware Bay Museum, located in the historic Oyster Shipping Sheds along the Maurice River in Bivalve, NJ. This museum documents the rich history of the oyster industry and the people who contributed to its growth. Through multimedia exhibits and historic artifacts, visitors can explore the maritime traditions of the Delaware Bay and learn about sustainable practices in the oyster industry.

Educational Programs and Community Engagement

From April through October, the AJ Meerwald sails to various ports, offering educational sails, public charters, and participating in regional events. BCB utilizes its extensive knowledge of the Delaware Bay’s environmental history to educate the public about the importance of preserving our aquatic ecosystems.

Impact

For over 25 years, the AJ Meerwald has inspired nearly 100,000 individuals, especially children, to appreciate and care for our environment. Your support is crucial in maintaining this legacy and ensuring that future generations can experience the beauty of New Jersey’s waters.

Why Donate?
