About Baylor College of Medicine International Pediatric AIDS Initiative
In 1996, Romania faced a devastating pediatric HIV crisis, with children suffering from untested blood transfusions. At that time, Texas Children’s Hospital was pioneering treatments for pediatric HIV. Dr. Mark Kline recognized the urgent need for change and traveled to Romania to assess the situation. With the support of Houston’s Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, Abbott Fund, and AmeriCares, the first center of excellence (COE) in the BIPAI network was established in 2001.
This initiative led to a remarkable decline in HIV-related deaths among children, dropping from 15% to just 1%. The success in Romania set a precedent for expanding care to other regions. In 2003, the Botswana-Baylor Children’s Clinical COE opened, treating 1,200 children in its first year. This model attracted attention from various governments, resulting in the establishment of six new centers across Lesotho, Eswatini, Malawi, Tanzania, and Uganda within five years.
Recognizing that access to treatment was only part of the solution, the Texas Children’s Global Health Corps was formed in 2006 to address the shortage of healthcare providers. This initiative has deployed nearly 200 physicians, enhancing local healthcare capacity and impacting over 100,000 healthcare workers in resource-limited settings.
Today, the BIPAI network serves over 350,000 children, women, and families through public-private partnerships in more than a dozen countries, solidifying its position as the largest provider of pediatric HIV care and treatment worldwide.
