Our Story
The Barbara Jean Brown Foundation was established in 2019 to honor the legacy of Barbara Brown, a resilient woman who dedicated her life to serving her community in Tacoma, Washington. Barbara, a single mother of eight, faced numerous challenges, yet she remained steadfast in her commitment to uplift those around her. Her journey from Wisconsin to Tacoma was marked by her determination to create equitable spaces for marginalized individuals, particularly in the face of racial and economic adversity.
Today, the foundation continues her mission, led by her children and grandchildren who are deeply rooted in the community. With a board comprised entirely of people of color, the BJB Foundation is uniquely positioned to understand and address the needs of Black men, women, and children affected by incarceration, poverty, and discrimination.
