Transforming Lives Through Debate
Founded in 1999, the Baltimore Urban Debate League (BUDL) emerged from a national initiative by the Open Society Institute aimed at revitalizing public education. Starting with just 90 students and 16 teachers in eight of Baltimore's most challenged neighborhoods, BUDL has grown into America’s largest urban debate league. Each year, over 1,000 students from elementary to high school engage in rigorous after-school debate training, independent research, and competitive tournaments across 35 high schools and 25 middle schools.
