Our Story

The Backstreet Cultural Museum was founded by Sylvester Francis in 1999, originating from his passion for documenting New Orleans' vibrant cultural traditions. What began in a garage has blossomed into a vital nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the rich heritage of the African American community in New Orleans.
