About Backpack Society

Founded in September 2019 by June Everett, Backpack Society is dedicated to removing food insecurity as an obstacle for children, enabling them to grow, learn, and thrive. What began as a grassroots initiative from June's kitchen table has transformed into a vital community resource. The organization initially aimed to provide weekend meals for students, ensuring they returned to school ready to learn. However, the onset of the pandemic shifted the focus to delivering weekly groceries to families in need.

Our Journey

Backpack Society partnered with ThunderRidge High School to identify students in need and launched a pilot program for 20 students. As the pandemic unfolded, the need for food assistance surged, prompting BPS to adapt quickly. Operating from June's garage, the organization delivered groceries directly to families until they secured a donated warehouse space in May 2020. By March 2021, BPS moved into its permanent home, marking a significant milestone in its mission to combat food insecurity.

Impact of Our Work

Backpack Society provides essential food support to children during weekends and school breaks, significantly reducing food insecurity and enhancing their academic performance. The organization has expanded its reach, partnering with schools across Douglas County, Littleton Public School District, and Englewood School District.
