Our Story

Backcountry Medical Guides began in 2010 from the cabin of a small boat in the Santa Cruz Harbor. Founder and paramedic John Taussig used ‘Breezy’ for the long commute across the Monterey Bay to host pioneering programs in wilderness medicine. With the help of family and paramedic friends, John developed and taught the first Wilderness First Aid (WFA) and Wilderness First Responder (WFR) classes. Over the years, BMG has expanded its offerings and locations, becoming a certified nonprofit in 2017, dedicated to providing high-quality medical training for remote environments.

Impact

In the past five years, Backcountry Medical Guides has provided scholarships to over 300 students, ensuring that life-saving educational courses and wilderness experiences are accessible to all. These educational offerings create safer and better-prepared communities, directly saving lives.
