Avalon Village is a nonprofit organization founded by Shamayim ‘Mama Shu’ Harris in Highland Park, MI, after the tragic loss of her son, Jakobi RA, in a hit-and-run accident in 2007. Mama Shu transformed her grief into a mission to create a safe, nurturing, and eco-friendly community, converting vacant and blighted land into valuable urban resources.
Avalon Village has transformed over 40 parcels of blighted land into community resources, including the Homework House, the Goddess Marketplace, and various community gardens and parks. The organization has received national recognition, including being a 2023 CNN Hero Top 10 finalist.
