Our Story

Since its founding in 1992, Avalon Housing has transformed the lives of thousands by providing stable, affordable housing to individuals experiencing homelessness. The organization emerged from a community-driven campaign to prioritize housing over parking in Ann Arbor, leading to the establishment of supportive housing as a national best practice. Named after the mythic island of healing, Avalon symbolizes a place where individuals can rebuild their lives and find community.

Impact

Avalon Housing focuses on housing stability, which is essential for fostering healthy lives and communities. With dedicated case management, an impressive 94% of residents maintain their homes, contributing to a significant 31% decrease in chronic homelessness in Washtenaw County since the opening of Hickory Way in 2021. Avalon currently manages 29 properties across Ann Arbor, Chelsea, and Dexter, with plans to add 152 more affordable apartments in the coming years.
