About Attleboro Enterprises Incorporated

Founded in the mid-1960s, Attleboro Enterprises Incorporated (AEI) began as a sheltered workshop in downtown Attleboro, providing meaningful employment opportunities for men and women with intellectual and developmental disabilities (ID/DD). Known affectionately as 'The Workshop', AEI initially focused on subcontract work from local businesses, allowing employees to earn wages through light assembly and mass mailings.

Adapting to Changing Needs

As the needs of the individuals supported evolved, so did AEI. In the 1980s, the organization expanded its services to include supported employment and job placement programs, successfully integrating participants into the private sector. AEI also established its first residential homes, offering 24-hour staffing support to individuals in need.

Innovative Programs and Community Impact

The 1990s marked a significant turning point for AEI, with the introduction of the first Day Habilitation program funded through MassHealth. This program provided essential medical, clinical, and developmental services tailored to the unique challenges faced by individuals. AEI played a pivotal role in the closure of the Dever Developmental Center, transitioning residents into fully accessible homes within the community.

Today, AEI serves over 600 individuals annually, including those on the autism spectrum and high school students with Individual Education Plans (IEPs). The organization has received the highest ratings from the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and the Massachusetts DDS Office of Quality Enhancement (OQE), affirming its commitment to providing essential services.
