Our Story

On a cold January morning in 1972, the Oriental Services Center (OSC) opened its doors in an old church basement in Little Tokyo, serving just 12 clients from the House of Happiness, a board and care facility. Over the years, OSC evolved into Asian Rehabilitation Services (ARS) in 1975, becoming a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization under the leadership of Sachio Kano and Seigo Hayashi. From these humble beginnings, ARS has grown into a vital agency that supports a diverse population with developmental challenges or disabilities.

Initially focused on the needs of developmentally disabled individuals of Asian ethnicity, ARS now serves all individuals with special needs, regardless of race or class. Collaborating with several regional centers in Southern California, ARS provides job placement assistance and services for clients with conditions such as cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and autism. Today, ARS continues to build on its legacy of serving underrepresented and underserved communities, expanding programs to address issues facing veterans, the homeless, and social justice.

Impact

ARS has long provided the Supported Employment program, facilitating a transition from supported to competitive employment for clients with developmental disabilities. With over 40 employees and clients delivering custodial services at the United States Court building in Los Angeles, ARS has consistently ranked highest in work quality assessment, communication, and job satisfaction for over 25 years.
