About the Austin Asian Community Health Initiative

The Austin Asian Community Health Initiative (AACHI) was established to address the unique health needs of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities in Central Texas. Originally founded as the Asian American Resource Center (AARC) in 2006, this nonprofit emerged from the efforts of the Network of Asian American Organizations (NAAO) to create a dedicated facility that offers essential services and resources tailored to the Asian American experience.

In 2013, the AARC opened its doors as a City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department facility, marking a significant milestone in community support. However, it soon became clear that there was a pressing need for health services within the Asian community. In collaboration with Austin Public Health, AACHI conducted a groundbreaking study that highlighted the disparities in health service utilization among various Asian subethnic groups.

In response to these findings, AACHI launched the Community Health Navigation (CHN) Program in 2016, targeting high-need communities such as the Burmese, Korean, and Vietnamese populations. This program has successfully provided healthcare navigation, patient advocacy, and education to over 60 residents and their families in just six months.

The Community Health Navigation Program is vital for vulnerable Asian subpopulations, including the Burmese, Korean, Nepali, Vietnamese, Syrian, Iraqi, and other Arabic-speaking communities. By offering services like health navigation education, interpretation support, and referrals to local resources, AACHI is making a tangible difference in the lives of those who need it most.
