About the Asian American Civic Association

Founded in 1967, the Asian American Civic Association (AACA) began as a vital resource for the Chinese community in Boston. Over the decades, AACA has evolved into a major social planning and cultural advocacy agency, playing a pivotal role in the establishment of essential local institutions such as the South Cove Community Health Center and the Chinese Golden Age Center. In 1972, AACA launched Sampan, a bilingual English-Chinese newspaper, fostering connections between the Chinese community, other Asian groups, and the broader Greater Boston area.

In response to the aftermath of the Vietnam War, AACA expanded its services in 1979 to support new immigrants and refugees from Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam. Recognizing the need for job training, AACA initiated its first workforce development program in 1984. By 2000, the organization had broadened its focus to include after-school programs for Boston’s youth. In 2010, the Buds & Blossoms Early Education Center was established, offering Mandarin immersion education.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, AACA emerged as a crucial support system, providing emergency assistance to those affected by job loss. Collaborating with health authorities, AACA launched a vaccine awareness campaign, distributing multilingual safety materials to vulnerable populations.
