Our Story

In 2006, Mike Sule returned to Asheville, North Carolina, inspired by a bike tour in Portland. He gathered 25 cyclists to participate in Asheville’s annual holiday parade, where they won awards for their spirited costumes. This $250 prize money laid the foundation for Asheville on Bikes, an advocacy group dedicated to enhancing the local bicycle culture. Over the years, Asheville on Bikes has championed initiatives like bike lockers downtown, community rides, and improved bike and pedestrian infrastructure.

Our Impact

Asheville on Bikes has successfully implemented two tactical urbanism projects and was honored as the Bicycle Advocacy Organization of the Year by the League of American Bicyclists in 2020. The organization has played a pivotal role in shaping local policies to promote cycling.
