About Asheville Buncombe Community Land Trust
Established in 2014, the Asheville Buncombe Community Land Trust (ABCLT) emerged from a community-led response to the alarming effects of gentrification in East Riverside. A report commissioned by the City of Asheville highlighted the urgent need for a solution to the displacement of residents, leading to the formation of Western North Carolina’s first community land trust. Through a series of bi-monthly planning meetings, diverse stakeholders, including displaced residents, local non-profit leaders, and community members, came together to define the purpose of ABCLT.
At the heart of ABCLT’s mission is the belief that community means having control over land, ensuring stability and security for all residents. The organization is built on values of respectful dialogue, racial equity, transparency, and collaborative decision-making, aiming to create a more just and equitable community.
