Our Story

Founded in 2014 by Marina LeGree, Ascend harnesses the power of mountaineering to empower young women in Afghanistan. The organization launched its first program in 2015, successfully training Afghan girls in leadership skills through sports. Following the Taliban's takeover in 2021, Ascend pivoted to focus on evacuating and resettling Afghan staff and participants, while also establishing new programs in Pakistan and supporting alumnae worldwide.

Impact

Ascend has empowered over 200 Afghan girls through leadership training and community service, with participants becoming leaders in their communities and achieving significant milestones, such as summiting Afghanistan's tallest mountain. The organization has also facilitated the resettlement of 134 Afghans to various countries following the Taliban's takeover.
