Artists Workshop of New Smyrna Beach
EIN: 59-1725813 · New Smyrna Beach, FL
Our Story
In February 1957, a group of fifteen passionate individuals gathered at a local Italian restaurant in New Smyrna Beach, inspired by a shared love for art. This meeting sparked the formation of the first chartered art group in the area, which officially launched in March 1958. With the support of the City Fathers, the group secured a space above the Parks and Recreation Department, where they voluntarily renovated the room to create their first home.
Within three months, membership grew to 51, leading to the inaugural art show at the Bank of New Smyrna, attracting 300 enthusiastic guests. This event marked the beginning of the Annual Membership Exhibition, a tradition that continues to thrive today.
By 1978, the Artists’ Workshop had expanded to over 200 members, prompting a move to a larger venue above the Chamber of Commerce. In 1980, the gallery opened its doors, providing a dedicated space for local artists to showcase their work.
In 2008, a collaboration with the Marine Discovery Center and the Wildlife Foundation of Florida led to an ECHO Grant, enabling the renovation of the old New Smyrna Beach High School Administration building. Today, the Artists’ Workshop occupies 4,000 square feet and boasts over 400 members, offering a diverse range of classes and programs.
