Our Story

Founded in 1965 by social justice activists Leandro Soto, Herman Gallegos, and James McAlister, Arriba Juntos began as the Organization for Business, Education and Community Advancement (O.B.E.C.A). The founders recognized the urgent needs of Latino immigrants in the Mission District, focusing on housing, education, employment, childcare, and healthcare. In 1967, the organization was renamed Arriba Juntos, reflecting its commitment to uplift the community. Over the decades, AJ has evolved, expanding its services to meet the diverse needs of San Francisco's population while remaining dedicated to its original mission.
