Our Story

In the spring of 1961, Robert E. Maytag gathered a group of passionate individuals to discuss the vision of establishing a zoo in Phoenix. This initiative blossomed into the Arizona Zoological Society, which successfully opened the Phoenix Zoo on November 21, 1962. Since then, the zoo has welcomed over 43 million guests, fulfilling its mission to inspire people to care for the natural world.

Impact

The Phoenix Zoo is one of the largest non-profit zoos in the United States, home to over 3,000 animals representing nearly 400 species, including many threatened and endangered species. The zoo actively engages in field research and conservation efforts aimed at boosting wild populations of imperiled Arizona native species.
