Our Story
In the 1940s, families faced immense challenges in caring for loved ones with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Dr. Elizabeth Boggs, a determined mother, refused to accept the limited options available for her son, David. In 1949, she united with other parents and community members to establish The Arc, advocating for individuals with IDD and their families. Dr. Boggs became the first female president of The Arc in 1956, paving the way for significant legislative changes, including federal funding for local programs. The Arc of Atlantic County was incorporated in 1961, launching its first daycare and preschool programs to support families. Today, The Arc employs over 350 dedicated staff and operates with an annual budget exceeding $21 million, providing vital services across Southern New Jersey.
