Appalachian Sustainable Development

Our Story

Since 1995, Appalachian Sustainable Development has been dedicated to creating a sustainable food and agriculture system that fosters healthy communities and profitable opportunities for the people of Central Appalachia. Initially focused on 15 counties in northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia, ASD has expanded its reach to include partners in West Virginia, eastern Kentucky, and southeast Ohio. By collaborating with diverse partners, ASD aims to enhance the intersections of agriculture, economic development, community building, and health.

Impact

ASD has successfully sold $37 million in produce, meat, and value-added products for regional farmers, donated over 7 million pounds of nutritious food to rural food pantries, and supported more than 300 new farm startups through comprehensive training and resources.
