Our Story
Founded in 1997 by Bart Weetjens and Christophe Cox, APOPO addresses the global landmine crisis and public health challenges through the training of African giant pouched rats. These remarkable animals, known as HeroRATs, are trained to detect landmines and tuberculosis, helping communities regain safe access to their land and improve health outcomes.
Impact
APOPO has successfully detected over 30,000 tuberculosis cases and cleared more than 100 million square meters of land contaminated by landmines, significantly enhancing safety and health in affected communities.
