Understanding Adult Polyglucosan Body Disease

Adult Polyglucosan Body Disease (APBD) is a rare inherited disorder that primarily affects the nervous system, often presenting symptoms as early as age 35. Individuals with APBD experience a progressive loss of mobility, bladder and bowel control, and cognitive challenges. This debilitating condition is caused by a mutation in the glycogen branching enzyme gene (GBE1), leading to the accumulation of polyglucosan bodies (PBs) in neurons, which disrupts communication between the brain and the body.

The Challenge of Diagnosis

APBD is frequently misdiagnosed due to its outward symptoms resembling those of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and other neurological disorders. This misdiagnosis can result in unnecessary surgeries and inappropriate treatments, causing further distress for patients. The lack of awareness among healthcare professionals and the public contributes to the under-diagnosis of APBD, leaving many individuals without the support and treatment they desperately need.

Foundation's Mission and Impact

Founded in 2005 by Gregory Weiss, a patient living with APBD, the Adult Polyglucosan Body Disease Research Foundation (APBDRF) is committed to increasing awareness and understanding of this rare disease. The Foundation focuses on educating at-risk populations, particularly within the Ashkenazi Jewish community, and enhancing the knowledge of healthcare providers. By supporting research initiatives, the Foundation aims to discover new treatment options and ultimately find a cure for APBD.
