Our Story

For over 60 years, the Animal Protective League of Springfield and Sangamon County has been a dedicated advocate for animals in need. Operating a limited admission shelter, APL prioritizes the intake of sick, injured, abused, and abandoned dogs and cats. With a commitment to finding loving, permanent homes, APL ensures that every animal leaves the shelter spayed or neutered, microchipped, and vaccinated. Each year, over 2,000 deserving animals are placed in caring homes, thanks to the support of the community and a network of devoted foster families.

Our Impact

APL provides life-saving initiatives, including medical care and rehabilitation, to prepare animals for their forever homes. The spay/neuter clinic performs 9,000 affordable surgeries annually, contributing to over 200,000 successful procedures since its inception in 2006.
