Our Story

The roots of Andean Textile Arts were established in 1976 when American anthropologist Ed Franquemont and ethnobotanist Chris Franquemont moved to Chinchero, Peru. There, they met Nilda Callañaupa, a young Quechua weaver, whose family embraced them into their community. This connection sparked the founding of Andean Textile Arts, dedicated to preserving and revitalizing the rich textile traditions of the Andes, which face threats from modernization.

Impact

Andean Textile Arts supports weaving communities across the Andes, empowering them to preserve their textile heritage while creating economic opportunities. Programs like the Young Weavers initiative and the construction of weaving shelters have made a significant difference in the lives of these artisans.
