American Ukrainian Medical Foundation
EIN: 38-3299890 · Northbrook, IL
Our Story
In the former Soviet Ukraine, medical education was conducted exclusively in Russian, creating significant communication barriers between physicians and Ukrainian-speaking patients. To address these challenges, the World Federation of Ukrainian Medical Associations (WFUMA) was established in 1977. Following the Chornobyl disaster and the collapse of the Soviet Union, WFUMA-Foundation forged vital relationships with Ukrainian medical professionals. In 2000, the organization restructured as the American Ukrainian Medical Foundation (AUMF), focusing on translating Western medical textbooks into Ukrainian, thereby promoting high-quality healthcare standards.
Impact
AUMF has successfully translated and published 22 medical textbooks, donated thousands of books to medical universities and libraries in Ukraine, and provided subscriptions to leading American medical journals. The organization has also supplied medical institutions with essential equipment and resources, significantly enhancing the quality of healthcare in Ukraine, especially during the ongoing conflict.
