About the American Shakespeare Center
The American Shakespeare Center (ASC) began its journey in 1988 as the Shenandoah Shakespeare Express, a traveling troupe dedicated to performing Shakespeare’s plays in their original staging conditions. Over the years, ASC has grown significantly, establishing the Blackfriars Playhouse in 2001, the only re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre in the world. With over 6,262 productions and an audience of approximately 2.1 million, ASC continues to illuminate the timeless works of Shakespeare.
Impact of the American Shakespeare Center
ASC is committed to making theater accessible to all, particularly for schools and underserved communities. The organization has fulfilled 100% of student matinee financial aid requests, welcoming over 7,600 students to the Blackfriars Playhouse. Through American Sign Language interpretation and community outreach, ASC expands access to live theater for diverse audiences.
