Our Story

The American Journalism Project was founded in 2019 by John Thornton and Elizabeth Green to tackle the local journalism crisis through venture philanthropy. By investing in and building sustainable nonprofit newsrooms, AJP ensures that media reflects the communities it serves.

Impact

Since its inception, AJP has committed over $42 million to nonprofit news enterprises, mobilizing an additional $53 million from local philanthropy. This has significantly enhanced the sustainability of local news organizations across the country.
