Our Story

The American Helicopter Museum and Education Center (AHMEC) was established in July 1993, initiated by the American Helicopter Society's Philadelphia Chapter. This museum commemorates the 50th anniversary of the AHS, showcasing the rich contributions of the Philadelphia region to the rotary-wing industry. With the generous donation of vintage helicopters by Peter Wright, the museum opened its doors on October 18, 1996, and has since become the nation’s premier museum dedicated solely to rotary-wing aviation, attracting approximately 35,000 visitors annually.

Impact

AHMEC serves around 35,000 visitors each year, extending its reach through offsite outreach efforts. The signature educational program, Girls in Science and Technology (GIST), empowers young girls by teaching them about STEM fields and providing mentorship from female college students. The museum also offers a comprehensive suite of programs, including the 'Science of Helicopters,' designed to engage audiences of all ages in the fascinating world of aviation.
