Our Story
The concept of Amani Public Charter School began at the kitchen table, where founders Charles and Debra Stern, along with a coalition of parents, educators, and business leaders, envisioned a high-performing charter school for Mount Vernon, NY. In 2010, the New York State Education Department authorized Amani, making it the first charter school in Mount Vernon and one of the few in Westchester County. Amani is committed to inclusivity, welcoming all children, including those with special needs and English language learners, through a random lottery held each April.
