Our Story
Founded in 2004 by a collective of five passionate artists, AlterTheater emerged in downtown San Rafael with a mission to amplify the voices of marginalized communities, particularly Black and Indigenous artists. Since its inception, the organization has been dedicated to producing new and contemporary plays that challenge the dominant cultural narratives. In 2008, AlterTheater began commissioning plays, and in 2011, it launched the AlterLab residency program, designed to support playwrights in exploring creative risks. This program has fostered a nurturing environment where writers can develop their craft, leading to the production of 75% of all works created in AlterLab.
