Our Story

Founded in 2003 by a dedicated group of parents and community members, the Alternative School for Math and Science (ASMS) was established to create a nurturing middle school environment tailored to the unique needs of students. With a commitment to excellence in education, ASMS began its journey in a beautifully renovated historic schoolhouse, initially serving just twenty students in a pilot program. Over the years, ASMS has expanded significantly, now employing 29 faculty members and serving 144 students in grades 6 through 8. In 2010, ASMS received an Absolute Charter from the New York State Board of Regents, and in 2015, it achieved national accreditation from the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. Most recently, in 2023, ASMS proudly gained dual-accreditation from both the New York State Association of Independent Schools and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Our Impact

ASMS is deeply committed to community service, exemplified by our participation in the 4th Annual Share the Warmth Coat Drive, where we distributed around 300 coats, hats, gloves, and scarves to families in need. Additionally, our long-standing partnership with Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos (NPH) has allowed us to sponsor two children, ensuring they receive essential support for their education and well-being.
