Our Story
The Altamont Free Library has been a cornerstone of the Altamont community since its inception in 1916. Originally located at the Sturges property, the library has undergone several relocations to accommodate its growing collection and membership. From the Hallenbeck Funeral Parlor to the Beebe Harness Shop, and finally to its current home at the train station, the library has continually adapted to meet the needs of its patrons.
Over the years, the library has embraced change, evolving from traditional media to modern digital services. Despite challenges such as the flooding during Hurricane Irene, the library has remained resilient, offering innovative programs like Grab & Go services and video storytimes. Today, it serves as an active informational and community center, providing access to six public computers and a variety of programs for all ages.
