Our Story
In June 2021, a coalition of Chatham County churches united to address the pressing need for nutritional assistance in the community. This collaboration, known as the Alliance Serving Chatham County, was born from the belief that together, they could create a sustainable service to provide free, pre-cooked, vacuum-packed, and frozen meals weekly. The initial pilot program, funded by St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, Pittsboro Presbyterian Church, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, aimed to serve 150-200 meals per week. However, by December 2021, the program had exceeded expectations, serving over 300 meals weekly and totaling more than 4,200 meals by year-end.
As the demand grew, so did the partnership, welcoming additional churches like Pittsboro United Methodist Church and Chapel In The Pines Presbyterian Church, along with generous support from local businesses such as Mountaire Farms, Carolina Brewery & Grill, and Panera Bread. The Chatham Chuckwagon program was established to ensure food safety and easy meal preparation, allowing community members to pick up meals conveniently during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In just over a year, the Alliance Serving Chatham County became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, having served over 10,000 meals and aiming to expand its mission further. The program has now provided over 20,000 meals, fostering community care and food equity in Chatham County.
