Our Story
Camp ALEC was inspired by the remarkable journey of Alec Cunningham, a child whose passion for learning was never extinguished despite facing complex communication and physical challenges. Throughout his education, educators often struggled to understand Alec's capabilities, leading to the misconception that he was 'too difficult to teach.' After Alec's untimely passing in 2011, a dedicated friend, Tina, helped establish Camp ALEC to ensure that children like Alec receive the education they deserve.
Since its inception in 2014, Camp ALEC has been committed to empowering educators with the tools necessary to support children with complex needs. Under the guidance of Drs. Karen Erickson and David Koppenhaver, the camp provides evidence-based assessments and interventions, enabling children to make significant gains in reading and writing.
Located at Rocky Mountain Village in Empire, Colorado, Camp ALEC offers a unique experience tailored for children who primarily communicate through augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). Campers engage in three hours of daily literacy activities in a one-on-one setting, while also enjoying traditional camp activities such as rock wall climbing, swimming, and campfires. Educators participate in a Level 2 Literacy Academy, enhancing their skills to better support complex learners.
