About the Albany Museum of Art

The Albany Museum of Art has a rich history that began in the early 1960s when local residents formed the Southwest Georgia Art Association. This dedicated group obtained not-for-profit status in March 1964 and established a vibrant program of exhibitions, lectures, and art instruction, all while relying on volunteer efforts and donated space. In 1980, the organization officially became the Albany Museum of Art, which has since grown to house a significant collection of traditional African art and has earned accreditation from the American Alliance of Museums.
