Our Story
In 2006, Paige Elenson, the founder of Africa Yoga Project, discovered the transformative power of yoga while on a family safari in Kenya. Inspired by local acrobats, she returned to teach yoga in informal settlements in Nairobi. There, she met the 'Ghetto Girls,' five teenage girls who traveled over two hours daily to attend classes. This experience ignited a passion to empower youth through yoga, leading to the establishment of Africa Yoga Project.
Impact
Today, over 6,000 individuals participate in more than 360 community yoga classes taught by AYP teachers from 21 African countries. More than 400 young people have been trained as yoga teachers, earning a living wage and making a significant impact in their communities.
