Our Story

In 1992, a dedicated group of family members from the National Alliance for Mental Illness - Placer County recognized the urgent need for housing for their loved ones facing mental health challenges. This led to a vital partnership with the Placer County Mental Health Department, resulting in the establishment of housing for clients needing training in basic living skills. In 2003, AMI Housing, Inc. was formed, achieving 501c3 status, and in 2017, it merged with the Nevada County Housing Development Corporation, significantly expanding its reach and services.

Impact

Today, AMI Housing and NCHDC provide shelter for over 400 individuals every night, many of whom are homeless or at risk of homelessness, including those with mental illness or other debilitating disabilities.
