Safe Surrender of Newborns

Our Story

In October 2000, a tragic event in Townsend, Tennessee, sparked a movement to protect vulnerable newborns. A baby girl was abandoned in a shed, leading to her untimely death. This heartbreaking incident motivated two local women, Shawna McConnell and Lisa Yount, to take action. They worked tirelessly with Tennessee legislators and concerned citizens to establish the Safe Haven Law, which allows mothers to surrender their newborns safely and anonymously.

Impact of the Safe Haven Law

Since its enactment in July 2001, and its amendment in 2020 extending the surrender period to 14 days, the Safe Haven Law has saved lives. More than 130 babies have been safely surrendered across Tennessee, with 7 in 2023 alone. A Secret Safe Place for Newborns of Tennessee operates a 24-hour helpline, providing crucial information and support to mothers in crisis.
