Our Story

826CHI is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the creative and expository writing skills of students aged 6 to 18. Founded in 2002, it is part of the 826 National network, inspired by author Dave Eggers. With a focus on individualized attention and community engagement, 826CHI bridges the gap between writing and activism, fostering a supportive environment for diverse youth in Chicago.

Impact

In the 2019-21 period, 826CHI served 3,268 students, focusing on academic gains, social/emotional development, and communication skills. The organization prioritizes BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, neurodiverse learners, and English language learners, ensuring that those most impacted by systemic disinvestment in education receive the support they need.
