Our Story

Founded in 1974 by Henry Richmond and Governor Tom McCall, 1000 Friends of Oregon emerged as a guardian of the state’s land use planning system. This organization operates independently of partisan politics, focusing on building livable communities, protecting family farms and forests, and conserving natural areas across Oregon.

Our Impact

Since its inception, 1000 Friends of Oregon has successfully litigated cases to enforce land use planning, crafted policies for farm and forest preservation, and trained over 200 emerging leaders through the Land Use Leadership Initiative (LULI) program.
