About Rural Appalachian Improvement League
Founded in 2001 by dedicated community volunteers, the Rural Appalachian Improvement League (RAIL) is committed to fostering a sustainable social structure and economic base in the southern West Virginia coalfields. This grassroots organization emphasizes the importance of local leadership, particularly among youth and young adults, in addressing the social and economic challenges faced by the community.
Impact in the Community
RAIL operates from the Mullens Opportunity Center (MOC), which serves as a hub for social entrepreneurship. Through its programs, RAIL has provided GED training, established a computer lab, and offered vital social services and youth employment opportunities. The organization also manages the Wyoming County Diabetes Coalition and promotes healthy living through community gardens and a farmer’s market.
