Extraordinary Lutheran Ministries (ELM) began its mission in San Francisco, where two congregations boldly extended calls to openly gay and lesbian pastors. This pivotal moment in 1990 led to the formation of Lutheran Lesbian & Gay Ministries, which evolved into ELM in 2007. Today, ELM is dedicated to expanding ministry opportunities for LGBTQIA+ individuals within the Lutheran Church, providing essential grants, support, and a candidacy process for LGBTQIA+ clergy and leaders.

ELM has successfully transformed the landscape for LGBTQIA+ ministry within the Lutheran Church, facilitating over 350 ordinations and creating a supportive community for LGBTQIA+ leaders and candidates.
