Domestic Violence Prevention

Our Story

Founded in 1976 by a dedicated group of volunteers, the Domestic Violence Service Center (DVSC) emerged from a vision to provide hope and safety for battered women and their children. This passionate task force established the first shelter in Northeast Pennsylvania in 1978, which quickly filled to capacity, highlighting the urgent need for such services. Celebrating over 40 years of impactful service, DVSC now operates in Luzerne and Carbon Counties, offering emergency shelter and direct support to those affected by domestic violence.

Impact

In 2023, DVSC provided essential services to 2,854 victims, children, and significant others in Luzerne and Carbon County. With Luzerne County ranking fifth in Pennsylvania for domestic violence-related deaths, the need for support is critical. Law enforcement responds to domestic violence calls an average of 24 times a day, underscoring the urgency of DVSC's mission.
